Origins & Story
Gnista is a Swedish producer of non-alcoholic spirits, based in Stockholm, with production handcrafted in small batches just outside Malmö in south Sweden, according to the producer's website. The producer describes Gnista as Sweden's first premium non-alcoholic spirit. On the website the company traces its origins to founders behind the award-winning chili drink Caliente, and describes itself as Sweden's leading innovator in premium non-alcoholic spirits.[1],[2]
The producer's website dates the development timeline across several years: development of Gnista began in early 2017, with Barreled Oak planned from the outset, and the company states it was further developed in 2018 with the goal of finding the essence of a great cocktail or wine drinking moment without alcohol. Gnista was founded in 2019 by Erika Ollén and Thomas. The first product was Floral Wormwood, a non-alcoholic spirit hand-made in south Sweden, which launched online and at selected premium bars across Scandinavia. The first commercial batch of Gnista Barreled Oak was bottled in August 2020.[1],[3]
According to the producer's website, Gnista expanded to the US market in March 2021, with an official launch date of 20 March 2021. The website states that nearly 90% of the first batch of Crisp and Funky Orange was pre-sold before the official release, and that both Crisp and Funky Orange are made in Sweden and launched for Summer 2025.[4],[5]
People & Founders
The producer's website states that Gnista Spirits was founded and is led by CEO Erika Eklundh, and that the company was founded by Erika Ollén and Thomas, the founders behind the chili drink Caliente. Per the website, Erika spent nearly twenty years working with food and foraging before starting the company, and has stated she worked for almost six years to create complex and sip-friendly alcohol-free drinks. Gnista's founder was invited as one of 15 global delegates to the official Milan Aperitivo Festival to explore the history, culture, and future of the Italian aperitivo.[6],[7]
The producer's website states that Gnista employs a master blender named Fredrik, who has experience from state-of-the-art food production, to adjust recipes batch-to-batch due to natural ingredient variation.[7]
Philosophy & What Sets Them Apart
On its website, Gnista frames its production philosophy through the mantra 'everything allowed as long as the result kicks ass and stays under 0.5% ABV.' The producer states its products are not de-alcoholized but built from scratch to achieve complexity without alcohol. The company says it claims to be the first brand globally to offer a premium zero-alcohol alternative designed to stand in for whiskey.[2],[8]
The producer's website states that founder Erika worked for almost six years to create complex and sip-friendly alcohol-free drinks that appeal even to those who enjoy strong, challenging alcoholic flavours. The website also states that Gnista incorporates Swedish values of sustainability and gender equality as core brand principles, and that the company uses organic produce when it is the better option and locally grown ingredients when possible.[1],[7]
What They Make
According to the producer's website, Gnista's current lineup includes Barreled Oak, Crisp, Floral Wormwood, French Red Wine Alternative, Funky Orange Wine Alternative, Italian Red Wine Alternative, and Pink Ginista. The range is organized into two families. The non-alcoholic spirits lineup includes Barreled Oak, Floral Wormwood, and Pink Ginista. The website describes Barreled Oak as a smoky sipper, Floral Wormwood as a bitter botanical aperitif, and Pink Ginista as a vibrant pink spirit.[9],[10]
The producer's website states that Gnista's Alt Wines lineup consists of four products: Italian Red Wine Alternative, Crisp, Funky Orange Wine Alternative, and French Red Wine Alternative. The website notes that the Alt Wines prioritize acidity, tannins, botanicals, and balance rather than sweetness, and that the Blonde wine alternatives are higher in acidity, lighter in style, and lower in sugar content than the Reds.[2],[11]
Techniques & Ingredients
The producer's website states that Gnista products are not de-alcoholized but built from scratch to achieve complexity without alcohol, crafted using gastronomy, food-tech, distillation, brewing, and barrel aging. The website describes the Red wine alternatives as a mixture of juices, a fermented brew, and spice extracts, and says the wine alternatives are crafted with botanicals, acidity, tannins, and depth, developed together with sommeliers.[2],[12]
Wood smoking. The producer's website states that Gnista smokes sugar beet syrup using a combination of birch and coffee woods. The website notes that sugar beet syrup is used for body, as a flavour carrier, and because it can be smoked, contributing to the smoky character of Barreled Oak, which the producer describes as a smoky sipper.[7]
Fermentation & brewing. The producer's website states that the Red wine alternatives are a mixture of juices, a fermented brew, and spice extracts, and lists brewing and barrel aging among the methods used across the range.[12]
Core staple ingredients. The producer's website names a set of core staple ingredients chosen for specific structural roles:[7]
- Rhubarb -- used for acidity
- Oak -- used for tannins
- Raisins -- used for sweetness
- Ginger, Vin Linh black pepper, and habanero -- used for bite
- Sugar beet syrup -- used for body, as a flavour carrier, and because it can be smoked
- Wormwood -- used for bitterness
- Lovage and other botanicals -- used for character
Natural ingredients across the range. Per the website, Gnista spirits use natural ingredients including botanicals, herbs, spices, oak, teas, and fruits. The website states the company uses organic produce when it is the better option and locally grown ingredients when possible, and that raw materials vary with season and provenance.[2]
Production standards. The producer's website states that all Gnista products are handcrafted in small batches just outside Malmö, made by hand in pots holding 2,000 litres, across 40+ steps described as labour-intensive, with a pallet jack used to measure ingredients going into the production pots. Because raw materials vary with season and provenance, a master blender named Fredrik adjusts recipes batch-to-batch. The website notes batch evolution: Crisp and Funky Orange Wine Alternative are produced in batches, with Batch #2 featuring more body and more balanced acidity compared to the first batch. Per the website, the non-alcoholic spirits are manufactured in Åhus by Balsgård Foodtech AB for Gnista Spirits AB, while the wine alternatives are manufactured in Kristianstad by the same producer. The website states all expressions are 100% vegan and gluten-free, low in calories, and contain only minimal natural sugars from botanicals, with unopened bottles having a shelf life of typically 18–24 months.[2],[12],[13]
Taste & Serving
Barreled Oak. The producer's website describes Barreled Oak as smoky and with much tannins from oak, designed to replace a whisky or rum. IWSC judges, as cited on the website, described it as having a fragrant nose with rich burnt caramel, hints of coffee and salt, balanced with hints of blackcurrant and wood on the palate, developing into a rich caramel and spice finish.[12],[14]
Floral Wormwood. IWSC judges described Floral Wormwood, per the website, as a complex and moreish offering with a creamy butterscotch character, aromas of tea and spice leading to dried apricot, vanilla, and honey on the palate.[14]
Pink Ginista. The producer's website lists Pink Ginista with tasting notes of classic gin botanicals, fresh spring rhubarb, green tea, and a peppery finish.[15]
Wine alternatives & food pairing. The producer's website states that both Gnista red wine alternatives contain structure, fruitiness, and slight acidity that help balance heat in spicy food pairings, a quality the website says de-alcoholised wines lack. The website notes the wine alternatives have a long shelf-life even after opening.[16]
Third-party sensory descriptions. On the producer's website, several outside voices describe the range. Drinks writer Alice Lascelles, a Financial Times columnist, described Floral Wormwood as having 'really good vermouth-like body' and being suitable for sipping on ice. David Gluckman, the drinks expert and creator of Baileys, described Floral Wormwood as peppery, earthy with an attractive hint of liquorice, and called it the most impressive non-alcoholic spirit he had tried. Vinepair is cited describing Gnista as having 'incredible body' with 'a rich mouthfeel and subtle burn that builds on the finish.'[17]
Collaborations
The producer's website states that Gnista collaborated with Berlin-based artist Kathrin Kuhn on a limited set of signed coasters, available in sets of four, made in Sweden from high-quality, sustainable materials. According to the website, Gnista donated half of all income from the Kathrin Kuhn collaboration, plus 20% of sales from all other Gnista products, to NSPCC, the UK's leading children's charity dedicated to preventing abuse and helping young people recover.[18]
The producer's website states that Gnista was selected as one of the brands featured in the Princess Cruises Zero Alcohol Program, launching Winter 2025–26, which the website describes as the first-ever global alcohol-free program by a major cruise operator.[6]
Recognition
According to the producer's website, Gnista won double gold at the 2023 edition of Central Europe's largest spirits competition, with both of its non-alcoholic spirits receiving gold medals. At the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), Barreled Oak scored 96 out of 100 and Floral Wormwood won a silver medal. Barreled Oak won gold at the Dutch NAS Awards, and Floral Wormwood was selected as a judge's favourite at the Alberta Beverage Awards.[14],[19]
The producer's website states that Gnista is served at 1, 2, and 3 Michelin starred dining establishments, including De Librije (Netherlands), Kadeau (Denmark), Brut 172 (Netherlands), Bottigleria 1881 (Poland), Aleia (Spain), Restaurante Oceane (Portugal), Thevar (Singapore), and Mraz & Sohn (Austria).[16]
The producer's website cites press features and industry recognition: Bloomberg identified Gnista as a 'global key player' in 2022; the brand was featured in Wine Enthusiast among top nonalcoholic spirits with big flavor, in The New York Times in an article about pleasantly bitter, grown-up nonalcoholic drinks, in The New York Times Wirecutter as one of the best non-alcoholic drinks, in Bon Appétit's list of best nonalcoholic drinks for 2024, in the Washington Post's list of best nonalcoholic whiskeys for sipping and mixing, and was named one of the best non-alcoholic drinks brands for 2024 by Vinepair. The UK channel 'How to Drink Without Drinking' gave Gnista a five-star review, described as an amazing whiskey alternative.[20],[21]
Per the producer's website, industry figures have praised the range: Kenneth Sadowsky described Gnista as 'the best in class of what I've tried in the segment'; Douglas, owner of Spirited Away (Manhattan's first non-alcoholic shop), called it the 'most eagerly anticipated debut of 2021'; Danny Meeks, founder of Ocean Beach Café, described it as 'the first Novel NA Spirit I tasted that woke me up to the possibilities of this category'; drinks writer Dan Magro called Floral Wormwood 'the first non-alcoholic spirit truly resembling a fine spirit'; and Friederike Duhme, sommelier of the year Austria 2024, expressed being 'truly impressed' by Gnista, particularly the spirits alternatives.[17]
